History of The Nigeria’s Railway Heritage/ Jaekel House
Constructed in 1898, the Jaekel House boasts over 150 years of heritage. Originally serving as the official residence of Nigeria’s first general manager of the Railway Corporation, the house is steeped in history. Named after Francis Jaekel OBE, a revered figure in the Nigeria Railway Corporation, the museum pays homage to his contributions to the railway system. With only two rooms and an all wooded flooring, Jaekel’s house now serves as a mini museum with photographic archives of pre and post independent Nigeria, historical events, places and personalities. It also holds artefacts of the old railway corporation.
Preserving the Past
In 2010, the Jaekel House underwent a significant renovation, thanks to the efforts of Professor John Godwin and ‘Legacy1995’, a non-governmental organization dedicated to preserving Nigeria’s historical landmarks.
